Over 1500 people lost their lives to the tragic sinking of the RMS Titanic. A few days after the sinking (April 15th) ships were sent out to recover as many corpses as possible, but only 356 bodies were found.Even after death the classes were treated differently. The 1st class passengers' bodies were transported and buried in wooden coffins, yet the lower classes had canvas bags. The recovered bodies went back to the mainland to be buried, unless they were unidentified. The unidentified bodies were buried at sea.
Court and Laws
Many people accused Bruce Ismay of urging Captain Smith to travel faster to get to New York on record time, and others loathed him for getting on a lifeboat when so many women and children were still on board. The American Court targeted Ismay, but eventually moved on to Captain Lord, captain of the Californian. Survivors from the Titanic tragedy said that they could clearly see the Californian's lights, but it kept going and left the Titanic to sink. These claims ruined Lord's life. That journey on the Californian was his last job, he was seen as a villain, and he was "wrongly accused." The English were frustrated with the Americans for taking control of the investigation, but they forgot that the White Star Line was American and most of the 1st class passengers were American. The English started their own inquiry. America concluded that even though mistakes were made no one was criminally at fault.
Laws were changed after the RMS Titanic sank to fit newly discovered safety hazards. Before the disaster the amount of lifeboats was determined by the amount of tons the ship weighs, and now it is determined by the amount of passengers. A radio operator is now required 24 hours. (The wireless operator on the Californian was off duty when the Titanic was sending out distress calls)
